Restore the second butterfly at the south entrance of the park

to honor the legacy of Expo ’74!

Anyone who visited the 1974 Expo World’s Fair remembers meeting people at the iconic butterflies. Designed by artist Eric Grohe, five butterflies of different solid colors marked the entrances of the event and served as meeting points for family and friends. Standing 50 feet tall, the wings extend about 60 feet across.

 

Of the five, only two remain. One butterfly was restored using taxpayer bond funds as part of the Riverfront Redevelopment project. It was covered in lilac fabric, as it was in 1974, and reposted near its original location at the north entrance to the park.

 

Interested donors can contribute to the restoration of the second

butterfly, to be posted at the southern entrance to Riverfront Park.

park goes through its own “butterfly transformation” during this

remodel, it is only fitting to return the original butterflies to their

posts so that they may fly again, welcoming old and new visitors.“
